Therapy

Therapy is a partnered journey during which we will explore challenges you are facing. I am a neurodiversity-affirming therapist particularly skilled in helping folks see themselves more kindly, which I view as a critical starting point for therapy.
Treatment options
My specialty is working with adults with ADHD and/or who struggle with problems with their eating (e.g. binge eating, emotional eating). I start therapy with an in-depth assessment including testing that provides a detailed picture of your mental health symptoms, personality, and neurotype traits. The results of the assessment are used to provide you with personalized feedback highlighting specific strategies and treatment recommendations to help you align with your goals. We will then work together in practicing skills to help improve mood, anxiety, ADHD symptoms, and/or eating habits.
In addition to traditonal therapy, I also offer what's called a "therapy intensive," which is designed for people who may prefer a brief "deep dive" into learning more about their habits without committing to therapy. My therapy intensive involves the same detailed assessment with a comprehensive report and three feedback and implementation sessions intended to assist you with trying out recommended strategies.
I also provide executive coaching for folks who are looking to improve their work situation, change their careers, or who are exploring entrepreneurship. Having gone through major shifts in my own career in recent years (no one taught us how to run a business in grad school), I discovered a passion for entrepreneurship and appreciation for the unique challenges and opportunities of being an ADHDer in the entrepreneurial space. I would love to be a "thought partner" for you if this is a journey you are pursuing.

FAQs
1. Why do you not accept insurance?
Not accepting insurance allows me to keep a smaller caseload and invest in high-quality ongoing education, ensuring that each client receives the full attention and high standard of care they deserve. Unfortunately, insurance reimbursements haven’t kept up with the rising costs of running a practice and don’t reflect the market rate for a therapist with my training and experience. Additionally, accepting insurance often means dealing with extensive administrative tasks, with companies frequently delaying or denying payments. By stepping away from these financial and administrative constraints, I can devote more time to my ongoing learning and to providing the best care possible—without the distractions of insurance-related tasks. I will provide you with a special receipt called a "superbill" that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement, but I can offer no guarantee that they will reimburse you. I will not communicate at all with insurance companies nor will I complete any additional paperwork or forms that they request. I will be glad to discuss my policies on this with you if you have questions, but these are non-negotiable terms.
2. How do I know if my insurance will reimburse me?
I would recommend contacting them prior to your appointment to ask them as every policy is different. They will likely ask you for the CPT codes that would be on the superbill. These codes would include 90791, 96130, 96131, 96136, and 96137 for your first appointment and all subsequent appointments would be codes 90834. Unfortunately, they are often unable to guarantee that they will cover the service and you may find some "legwork" is required to advocate for coverage. If they tell you I am in network, this is an error. Please notifiy me if this occurs.
3. What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
Coaching is considered "within the scope of practice" for psychologists and we are held to the same standards of conduct for both. Coaching is an approach that focuses on behavior change that is not specifically related to a mental health disorder. A good example of a coaching relationship would be hiring me to help you with strategizing a new business idea, developing a plan for success, and staying committed to the plan. If you're not sure which approach is right for you, request an appointment and we can discuss the appropriateness of each option for your needs. Importantly, insurance will not reimburse you for coaching services.
4. Do you offer a sliding scale rate?
No. Rather than offer reduced cost therapy, I offer a variety of free and low-cost educational resources on my website and social media platforms. I also donate to and fundraise for organizations that provide mental health education, advocacy, and access services.
5. How do I find a therapist who accepts my insurance?
Two options: try the therapist search tool at www.psychologytoday.com and you will find profiles of therapists in your area. You can search by insurance, location, topic area, etc. and will see profiles of therapists to review. In most cases, you can see anyone licensed in your state, so expand to include your entire state if you're having trouble finding someone close to home. You may have to see someone virtually if you need to focus on a specific topic. Alternatively, you can contact your insurance company and request a list of in-network providers. You might also be able to access a list on your insurance portal. I recommend looking for those providers' web listings if you'd like more information before reaching out.
6. Can I use my diagnosis from this assessment to access medication treatment and/or work/school accommodations?
Possibly. Some providers, schools, and/or work places require a more in-depth evaluation than I provide before they will provide medication or accommodations. This would commonly involve an entire additional session completing standardized testing. This level of testing is not necessary for the intended purpose of my therapy process, so I would refer you elsewhere if you need that more in-depth assessment. If requested, I will provide accommodation recommendations in your assessment report and if you need a version that you can submit to school or employer, please let me know this at the start of our process. If the accommodations process requires additional paperwork above and beyond what is included in my assessment report (e.g. standardized form required by your employer), there will be an hourly fee required to complete these additional forms.
7. Do you offer virtual or in-person meetings?
Both! If you are in the Northern Alabama area, I can see you in my office in Huntsville. If you are in a state that participates in Psypact, I can see you virtually. The following states participate, please see the Psypact page for the most up-to-date information about your state's participation https://psypact.gov/BlankCustom.asp?page=psypactmap
